Hockey is a fast-paced team sport played between two opposing teams, where players use sticks to maneuver a puck (in ice hockey) or a ball (in field hockey) with the objective of scoring goals by shooting it into the opponent's net. The sport has multiple variants, the most prominent being: 

 

  • Ice Hockey – Played on an ice rink, where players wear skates and use a hard rubber puck. It is known for its physicality, speed, and frequent player substitutions. 
  • Field Hockey – Played on grass, artificial turf, or watered turf, using a small, hard ball. It is more common in Europe, Asia, and Australia, with different rules than ice hockey. 
  • Inline Hockey – A variant played on a smooth surface with inline skates, using a puck or ball. 
  • Street Hockey – A casual version played on pavement, often with a ball instead of a puck. 

 

Key Elements of Hockey:

 

  • Teams: Typically consist of 6 players in ice hockey (including a goaltender) and 11 players in field hockey. 
  • Sticks: Curved at one end, used to control and shoot the puck/ball. 
  • Goals: Nets guarded by a goalkeeper; scoring is achieved by shooting the puck/ball into the opponent's goal. 
  • Gameplay: Involves skating (in ice hockey) or running (in field hockey), passing, stickhandling, and defensive strategies. 
  • Physicality: Ice hockey allows body checking, while field hockey is generally non-contact.
