Boxing is one of the oldest combat sports, with roots tracing back to ancient civilizations.

 

  1. Ancient Origins 

 

  • Mesopotamia & Egypt (3000 BCE): Early depictions of fist-fighting appear in carvings. 
  • Ancient Greece (688 BCE): Boxing (Pyxmachia) was introduced in the Olympic Games. Fighters wrapped their hands in leather straps (called *himantes*). 
  • Ancient Rome: Gladiators fought in brutal matches, often to the death. The sport declined after the fall of Rome.

 

2. Modern Boxing Emerges 

 

  • 18th Century England:  Bare-knuckle boxing became popular with minimal rules. 
  • Marquess of Queensberry Rules (1867):  Established modern boxing rules, including rounds, gloves, and the 10-count knockout.

 

Rules of Modern Boxing

 

1. Match Structure 

 

  • Rounds: Typically 10-12 rounds (3 minutes each, with 1-minute breaks). 
  • Weight Classes: From Flyweight (≤112 lbs) to Heavyweight (200+ lbs). 
  • Victory Conditions: 
  • KO (opponent down for 10 seconds). 
  • TKO (referee or corner stops the fight). 
  • Decision (judges' scorecards). 

 

2. Fouls 

  • No hitting below the belt, holding, headbutting, or hitting a downed opponent.
